this body of work was created between 2003 and 2004, during the time that i was working part-time in a nicely equipped woodshop. i began noticing the beauty in the natural grain and color of certain species of wood, most notably black walnut and poplar. i interpreted the lines of the wood as landscapes- island chains, horizon lines, and seascapes. i began splitting sections of timber into slices and rearranging them as the patterns in the grain formed images in my mind. these two-dimensional wood paintings are best described as a collection of natural landscapes. all the colors you see in these pieces are unaltered. this work culminated in an exhibition entitled "between two beauties."
